Cross Training for all members

Anthony Pardy will be running cross training sessions for all ANU Boat Club members. These sessions are an alternative to traditional gym work and are vital for building strength and fitness up over winter. All are welcome to come and join in, however it is strongly recommended that those rowing in the senior squad attend. The sessions will be held on Tuesday morning at 7 AM and on Thursday afternoons at 5:30 PM.

ANUBC Duo Conquer NSW

The ANU Boat Club duo of Mack Wilcox and Chris Ritchie put several national championships aspirants on notice when they took out two NSW state titles in Penrith on the weekend. In a well judged race plan in the final of the Championship Men’s Elite Lightweight Pairs Mack and Chris were content to sit just behind early pace-setter Sydney Rowing Club for the first 1400m, before upping their pressure to move into the lead for the run to the finish line. They crossed the line 4.28 seconds clear of the Sydney pair, with a pair from Toowong Rowing Club taking the bronze medal. Later the same day Mack and Chris demonstrated their dominance at the regatta by leading from start to finish in the final of the Championship Men’s Elite Lightweight Double Sculls. Queensland and Sydney Unis took the silver and bronze medals respectively, with the ANU crew of Callum Mackenzie and Chris Lethbridge finishing 4th. ANU also picked up a medal in the Championship Elite Men’s Heavy double, with new ANUBC member Nick Harris and his Canberra RC partner Dave Wright taking a bronze. In all, seven ANU crews raced in finals at the Championships. The NSW Championships were the last major hit-out for many NSW, Qld, Vic and ACT crews before next month’s National Championships.

26/4/09 ANUBC rower Louise Kilby has been selected for the Australian Women’s Under 23 Coxless Four to race at the World Under 23 Rowing Championships in Racice in the Czech Republic. National selection is a great outcome for Lou who has steadily worked her way up through the ranks to burst onto the national scene this year as a national champion and now national representative. Lou will join crew mates Jessica and Alexandra Hill from Victoria and Philippa Lindley from Queensland for two months preparation in Melbourne before heading to Europe for the championships in July. Congratulations Lou!

Five boats progressed from the pair's semi final, raced early this afternoon. The Beijing Olympic pair of Cook and Crowe were the clear winners of the semi, with the remaining qualifying spots tightly fought. The ANU pair held on to the fifth qualifying spot by a nerve-wracking 0.41 of a second. The final will be raced at 8.25 am tomorrow. ANU BC rowers win U23 womens pair!!!

ANUBC rowers Louise Kilby and Christabelle Northam became the Australian Champion Women’s Under 23 Coxless Pair on Friday morning at Lake Barrington in northern Tasmania. The pair rowed a textbook race in their final. They were very clean and aggressive out of the start and were level for first place with a Queensland pair after 100m. By 500m the Queenslanders had moved to a slight lead over the ANU pair, which they held until 250m to go. The ANU pair then stood on the throttle and powered past the others to win the gold by 0.79 seconds. As the ANU duo crossed the finish line the small but enthusiastic group of ANUBC True Believers watching from the shore went crazy, while an emotional club President rang the Canberra Times and the ABC to proclaim the great news. The win is ANU Boat Club’s first national title in a few years, and a testament to the hard work put in by Lou and Christabelle and their coaches Adam Horner and James Macartney. The two ANU rowers are now setting their sights on another two national finals that they have qualified for – the Under 23 Coxless Fours and Under 23 Quad Sculls. These will be raced tomorrow morning. More information about the National Championships regatta, including the detailed split times for Lou’s and Christabelle’s pairs final, can be found on the Rowing Australia website at www.rowingaustralia.com.au/homepage.shtm Nick Hunter | President | ANU Boat Club
